Lower Sixth Biology field trip
Biology is a very important subject area, particularly in the modern world with so many innovations in bio-medical science and developing global ecological problems. In recognition of this, we ensure that much of the biology taught in the Middle and Senior School is clearly related to human biology. We also have a departmental display of a wide range of up-to-date news articles on biological themes to provoke thought and discussion.
We aim to develop students equipped with knowledge that is not only useful to passing exams but makes them more aware of their place in the developing world in which we live. To this end, we incorporate a wide variety of teaching and learning strategies into our schemes of work, – interactive IT learning resources, PowerPoint, Internet research & interactive web sites, library research as well as traditional class teaching. We also believe that practical work and development of investigative skills is an important part of biological science and endeavour to include as much work of this nature as possible.

Facilities and Resources
There are four well-equipped labs dedicated to the teaching of biology from Key Stage 3 to A-level. All have a computer terminal and three have fixed multimedia projectors which are used with classes throughout the school for anything from watching video footage to class involvement in interactive animations or quizzes. Nearby is a computer room equipped for data logging experiments and there is extensive interactive and simulating software covering Key Stage 4 and A-level topics. There are also revision games to make final revision for GCSE examinations more interesting.
The Biology Department is serviced by a full time technician (Mrs Karen Hooks) who supports preparation for class practical sessions and the preparation of photocopied resources. She also oversees the computer lab.
The school estate includes a lake and a collection of a wide variety of native & exotic tree species. These provide many habitats and interesting materials for examination in class.
