Modern Languages : home
Aims
Our main aim as a department is to enable students to read, write, speak and listen effectively in the medium of a Modern Foreign Language. We aim to increase the students’ enjoyment of learning a new language by extending their competence to understand and use the foreign language for communicative purposes.
Modern Foreign Languages – A Definition
Knowledge of the structure and content of a foreign (non-English) language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation.
The four skill areas to be addressed in the delivery of the MFL curriculum are:
- listening
- speaking
- reading
- writing
A View of Learning
Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge or skill through study, experience or teaching. It is a process that depends on experience and leads to long-term changes in behaviour potential. Behaviour potential describes the possible behaviour of an individual (not actual behaviour) in a given situation in order to achieve a goal.
A View of the Teacher
The role of the teacher is to facilitate progression through the Modern Languages curriculum in line with the schemes of work and school and departmental policies.
