Aims
The aims of the Mathematics department are:
- To develop, maintain and stimulate students’ curiosity, interest and enjoyment in Mathematics.
- To develop students’ familiarity with appropriate mathematical concepts, principles, methods and vocabulary.
- To develop students’ understanding of Mathematics in its widest context and to see how it relates to themselves outside school.
- To encourage students to develop personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative, self-confidence and independence.
- To enable all students to have equality of access to mathematics and to experience success in their work.
In Years 8 to 10 all students follow courses that conform to, but are not bound by, the Northern Ireland Program of Study for Key Stage 3 Mathematics. At the end of year 10 all boys are entered for tier C, D or E of the Key Stage 3 Mathematics test.
In Years 11 and 12 boys must study for GCSE Mathematics at either higher or foundation level. Students who perform sufficiently well at Key Stage 3 may opt to study GCSE Additional Mathematics in addition to higher tier GCSE Mathematics.
In year 13 boys have the option of studying for 'AS' Level Mathematics or a full 'A' Level in Mathematics if they intend to study 'A' Level Further Mathematics in year 14. In year 14 students may opt to complete the 'A2' units required for 'A' Level Mathematics or to extend their studies to incorporate 'A' Level Further Mathematics.
