Government and Politics is a popular subject choice at AS and A2. There are currently 35 boys across the two year groups and we follow the Edexcel Syllabus.
In Year 13 students study democracy and political participation, parties, pressure groups, and elections and in Unit 2, Governing the UK. At A2 the emphasis shifts to the USA, and students study similar aspects of American Politics. There is no coursework and assessment takes the form of a written examination.
The classroom experience is enhanced by a range of visiting speakers and trips. This year we have enjoyed the company of Baroness Blood, First Minister, Peter Robinson and have had questions and answer sessions with MLA’s from each party in the Assembly. Visiting lecturers from Queen's have also stretched our more able.
Politics is often studied alongside History and there is a clear overlap, but we have boys from many disciplines, all achieving well and enjoying the challenge of a relevant and lively course. It is great preparation for any student who looks to go into politics, study for a degree in a related subject or simply develop a better understanding of their own society. It also encourages a healthy interest in current affairs and that should result in a well informed, articulate interview candidate.
