House Cookery Competition
The Home Economics Department hosted the fourth House Cookery Competition at CCB. Eight budding cooks from Middle School were assigned a brief to produce a dessert which contained at least two fruits.
Senior School were asked to produce a ’30 minute meal’ for a week night for their friends. Two fruit crumbles, exotic fruit salads and cobblers were produced by the younger contestants whilst Sirloin Steak, spiced prawns, Indian Chicken and lemon cheesecakes formed but a small part of the Senior School entries. We were fortunate to have Alan Higginson and Adrian Lowry from the very prestigious restaurant 27 Talbot Street along as judges.
They were very impressed with the creativity, skills and passion of the boys and indeed the bravery of some of the dishes attempted. After some very considered marking the winners were declared as follows;
Middle School – Cameron Clear Yr 8 Davis’s

Senior School – Jamie Whyte Yr 12 Dobbin’s
In a parallel competition members of staff from each house also competed. Each were handed a bag containing a variety of ingredients and, along with a selection of spices, oils and other store cupboard ingredients they had to create a ‘Ready Steady Cook’ meal within the 45 minutes given.
Up for the challenge, Rodney Hall, Darren Walker, Peter Campbell, Alan Templeton and John Anderson manfully pulled out all the stops to produce several variations on the pork, soured cream, cous cous, leek and onion parcels they had been given. A mountain of dishes and pans appeared from nowhere and they monitored their opposition carefully as they went along.
It was the determination of the female members of staff and the way in which they ‘ knew their way around a kitchen’ that swayed the judges and so Sabine Kirsch and Rebecca Kyriacou were declared joint winners.
The judges very kindly donated vouchers to the winning pupils to spend at 27 Talbot Street.
