News: Winners of the National Sailing Regatta
This year’s CCF National Sailing Regatta was represented by:
• Ross Vaughan, Year 12 Lytle’s, sailing a Pico
• Tim Ferris, Year 12 Allison’s and Gary Davidson, Year 12 Lytle’s crewing a Bosun
Sailing conditions on the Saturday were extremely difficult. Only those with the skill to use the slight breezes available to overcome strong tides were able to finish the course. Commendably, both our vessels made the finish line in respectable times.
Despite the poor weather conditions, a high calibre of race entrants was abundantly clear. The Pico Class was to be eagerly contested by a cadet who sails for Team GB and one from the Irish National Team.
Sunday’s weather conditions were much better. Force three winds made for fast and exciting sailing. Throughout the day Ross battled the cadet from Team GB in closely fought races. Only by winning the final race of the day did Ross secure an overall win, bringing the National Sailing Regatta trophy to Campbell College (and Ireland) for the first time.
