News: Golf Success
Whilst most of the clubs at CCB are only really finding some momentum at the beginning of October, the same could not be said of those representing the CCB Golf Team.
Already having played in several matches and competitions, the team remains unbeaten on all fronts and is proving to be most competitive not only in the province of Ulster, but also in Ireland and the UK.
To date, the team are Ulster Strokeplay Champions 2007 /08, having finished top in their qualifying group for the Irish Schools’ Match Play Championships and, currently, they top their group in the Ulster Schools Golf League. It could be argued in many cases that it is common practice for Campbell College to develop a talented 1st XV rugby team or 1st XI Hockey Team; however, it could also be said that never before has CCB produced such a talented crop of young golfers.
When considering this fact you need look no further than Garth Boyd, the team Captain, who has already won best overall golfer at the Ulster Strokeplay Championships and the Irish Schools’ Match Play Qualifiers. Simon Moore, James Rodgers and Andrew Dickson complete the talented line up and have been thriving on the opportunity to represent CCB in so many competitions. Last October they finished runners-up in the Ulster Schools’ Golf League and in May they were runners-up in the ISGA UK finals. The boys appear to have benefited from these experiences and they seem set on accepting nothing but silverware on all fronts this year. Indeed, they had the opportunity to compete with the best in the ISGA Schools’ Cup at ‘The Shire’, London
the team finished second overall to Bedford School. This is the second National golf tournament that we have finished in the runner-up slot: these performances rank as significant achievements in notable tournaments
The team will now compete in the Irish Match Play Championships in Sligo contested next April.
Irrelevant to the outcome in these competitions, it is not inconceivable to think that one day, one of these dedicated individuals may make a healthy living from playing golf or, indeed, make a debut on the International pro-tours.
