CCB Fencing Club news
The past few months have been busy ones for CCB Fencing Club. The establishment of a new club always brings feelings of apprehension about the success of the club and wonderment about how well received it will be among the pupils.
These concerns proved to be unfounded and CCB Fencing Club has gone from strength to strength since its re-establishment in the Total Curriculum. November saw two of our pupils (who had only been fencing from the beginning of the school year) selected to represent Northern Ireland in the British Youth Championships in England. Congratulations must go to Kristofer Gwynne, Year 8 Cairnburn, and Jason Li, Year 9 Knock, for this remarkable achievement after such a short involvement in the sport.
January witnessed the organisation of a three day Fencing Training Camp at CCB. The coach was organised in conjunction with Belfast Fencing Club and training organised by Mr Sean Walton (National Coach). Those from CCB Fencing Club who attended the training weekend were able to test their own stamina and fencing skills, and also to exercise their skills against more experienced fencers from clubs outside CCB.
More recently, CCB Fencing Club represented the College in the PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers) Team Event. The boys involved were Kristofer Gwynne, Year 8 Cairnburn, Jason Li, Year 9 Knock, and Simon Coleman, Year 9 Netherleigh. The boys fencing skills were exercised to the limit at this event as they ranked against some very experienced fencers from other clubs. Their fencing skills were highly commended by the event organisers who were delighted with some of the hits they were able to score against older and more experienced opponents.
Fencing has proven to be a very popular addition to the Total Curriculum at CCB. The Club is, currently, over subscribed and has a long list of expectant pupils from all year groups waiting for a place in the club’s ranks. The progress made by the existing club members is due to the efforts of the club coach Sean Walton; and his expertise is much appreciated.
We hope to see the club going from strength to strength over the next academic year and to see CCB Fencing Club continue to make an impact on the Northern Ireland and, hopefully, the United Kingdom fencing circles.
