Irish Schools’ Matchplay
The Senior Golf team qualified in the top 4 during the Irish Schools’ Matchplay Qualifying Competition held at Kirkistown Golf Club on Monday 16 April. In addition, David Irvine won the Best Gross Score in the competition, going round this challenging course in 3 over.
Unfortunately, in the semi-final, held on Thursday 19 April, the Campbell team with the addition of a fifth player – James Rodgers, Year 10 Netherleigh, lost to Portora Royal School.
The next big event for the team is to take part in the Independent Schools’ Golf Championship 8-9 May at Hollin’s Hall Leeds, and with the return of Garth Boyd, Year 13 Bowen’s, the team are hopeful of a good result.
The Senior Team:
- Patrick Small, Year 13 Lytle’s
- Simon Moore, Year 13 Davis’s
- David Irvine, Year 12 Davis’s
- Andrew Dickson Year 13 Armour’s
Following their success in the Irish Matchplay Championships, the Senior Golf Team: Garth Boyd (Captain) Year 13 Bowen’s, Patrick Small, Year 13 Lytle’s, and Simon Moore, Year 13 Davis's, qualified from the ISGA regional playoffs and were invited to the UK finals in Leeds on 8 and 9 May.
The tournament finals were held at the Hollins Hall golf course, owned and managed by the Marriot Hotel. The hotel itself is a fine establishment, enhanced by what was indeed a picturesque golf course, situated no more than a stone-throw away from the hotel. Although a beautiful setting, the course was tricky playing as a par 71 and over 6,500 yards long; it proved a fitting challenge for the talented participants over the two day competition.
On the first day, Garth Boyd led well from the front, and played a fine round of golf through what were notably difficult weather conditions; strong winds and frequent heavy rain showers did not deter Garth from shooting a fine score of 75, 4 over par. Patrick Small followed suit with another impressive score of 75, although it has to be said he was rather unfortunate not to come in 2 or 3 over par following relatively straight forward birdie putts on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. Simon Moore, although dropping a few shots on the first few holes, pulled the team back into contention with a fine last 9 holes, finishing with a score of 80.
The tee-off on day two was much more pleasant; the boys set out on optimistic form in second place, they enjoyed the opportunity to lead the field, as the competitors went out in rank order. Garth bettered his previous score and finished the day on an excellent score of 74, whilst Patrick dropped a few shots and finished with an 80. The better weather conditions, however, appeared to suit Simon and he played some fine golf; he went on to birdie 3 of the final 9 holes to finish on a 4 over par total of 75 for day two and ensured that, at the end of play, Campbell finished in an impressive 2nd position.
The outstanding performance of the team can only be emphasised by the fact that they finished above Loretto, a private school from Edinburgh, which has a golf academy; and were only beaten to 1st place by 3 talented golfers from Millfield, a Sports Academy from Somerset.
A marvellous achievement by three talented young golfers
