News summer 2006-07: Tennis Champions
Ulster Schools' Tennis Champions
This term has been one of Campbell’s most successful tennis seasons to date. Four tennis teams were entered for the Ulster Schools’ Tennis Cups: Year 8, Junior, Intermediate and Senior team. All but the Intermediate team progressed from the league matches to the semi-finals; the Intermediate team consisting of Alex Todd, Year 12 Lytle’s, Rory Gouk, Year 11 Altona, Adam McNaught, Year 12 Bowen’s, and Patrick Henderson Year 12 Yates’s.
The Junior team consisting of Gareth Hughes, Year 10 Netherleigh, Rory Scholes, Year 10 Norwood, Max Thompson, Year 10 Cairnburn, and Justin Hool, Year 9 Cairnburn, played RBAI in one of the semi-finals. Despite playing to an excellent standard, they were defeated by 5 matches to 1.
The other two teams beat stiff competition in the semi-finals to reach the finals in their respective groups. The Year 8 team consisting of Ross Campbell, Belmont, Rob Haldane, Tewskard, Jason Gilliland, Netherleigh, and Michael Williams, Norwood, defeated Banbridge Academy in their semi-final by 5 matches to 1, whilst the Senior team defeated CAI in what were atrociously wet conditions.
The quality of tennis in the finals was outstanding and despite determined resilience from our opposition, Campbell won the Year 8 Ulster Schools’ Cup and the Senior Ulster Schools’ Cup. The Year 8 team played RBAI with a final score of 4 matches to 2; similarly, the Seniors also defeated Methodist College by 4 matches to 2. The Senior team consisted of the tennis captain Neil Stewart, Year 13 Bowen’s, Ben Fetherston, Year 13 Price’s, Stephen Hill, Year 12 Bowen’s and Michael Scholes, Year 13 Lytle’s. This was a significant victory as it ended Methody’s run of six consecutive victories.
All four teams should be commended for their commitment during the season and, particular, congratulations should be offered to the winning teams.
