Campbell College Sailing Team

Great performances from Ryan Charteris and Paddy Spratt in the double handed Boson class and from James Law in the single-handed Pico class events ensured a top five finish - the best finishing position that Campbell has attained in recent years.
This was a commendable result amongst a gathered field of the best boat handlers in the UK.
Congratulations to the CCF Royal Navy section on their recent victory in the Scottish Regatta
Ross Vaughan, Year 11 Lytle’s, achieved a second place in Pico dinghy; and then in a later race added a win, securing an overall victory in the Pico class for Campbell College.
Patrick Spratt, Year 12 Davis’s, and Peter Chamberlain, Year 12 Bowen’s, attained first and third places in a Boson. They worked together seamlessly despite never having crewed together. In the final race of the day they were less than half a boat length away from an overall class victory.

Website
The official Campbell College website has been launched and now displays a modern and easy to use design replete with useful information on the College. Talks of a new website started in early 2005 and by mid 2005 it was in production. Old Campbellian David McClelland, of David Creative, handled the design along with the College’s Marketing Manager.
A news section keeps you up to date with College activities: you can discover all that Campbell offers by way of facilities and the grounds; there are a series of informative pages, including information about boarding, the Academic Departments, and with a link directing you to the Junior School website. In addition, links are provided specifically for students and teachers to access their c2k computer files and email. Homework timetables and the Term’s Calendar are available to download as well as the new weekly Total Curriculum calendar.

Around 200 people assembled in the Central Hall on Sunday morning for the first Family Service of the term. This gathering included many parents, dayboys and boarders, Governors and Teachers as well as the school's musicians. The guest speaker for the service was Dr James Kincade, a former Headmaster of MCB.
As well as musical contributions from the school choir and orchestra the following boys gave a notable performance in a brass ensemble located high up in the balcony: Philip Erskine, Year 13 Chase’s; Richard McCann, Year 12 Allison’s; James Doherty, Year 11Bowen’s; and Jed Farquharson, Year 10 Cairnburn, as well as a confident contribution from our new organist - Stephen Dougherty, Year 12 Price’s.

A total of 230 people assembled in the Central Hall on Sunday 22 October for the second Family Service of the term. Our guest speaker was The Rev. George Loane from Knock Methodist Church.
As well as musical contributions from the school choir (Christ be my Light) and orchestra (Beethoven’s Ode to Joy) the following boys gave an atmospheric performance of Handel’s famous Sarabande in D minor: Andrew Graham, Year 10 Altona; Richard Hill, Year 12 Lytle’s; Andrew Burns, Year 12 Price’s; and Stephen Hunter, Year 14 Dobbin’s.

Irish Schools’ Tournament
The College welcomed sixteen schools from across Ireland in the 3-day Irish Hockey Association Schools’ Tournament at the end of October. The addition of the new all-weather surfaces has enhanced the College’s sporting provision and enabled us to entertain such prestigious events.
The tournament was well contested, our 1st XI securing victories over Bangor Grammar School (2-0) and The King’s Hospital (3-0) before facing Bandon Grammar School; an assured performance by the Campbell team resulted in an unfortunate defeat in the last minutes of play (2-3).
In the semi-finals, Banbridge Academy played Cookstown High School, this finished 3-3 and Banbridge won on penalty strokes; in the other semi-final RBAI faced Bandon Grammar School and finished 2-2 with RBAI winning on penalty strokes.
The final was a very exciting game (RBAI vs. Banbridge Academy) that ended 4-4 at the close of normal time. Banbridge won by a 'golden goal’.
Campbell College: a Cambridge International Examination Centre
We now offer our overseas students the International GCSE in English as a Second Language. This exam is recognised by a large number of universities in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia as evidence of adequate competence in English for university entrance purposes.
We are delighted that the school has been recognised by Cambridge University International Examinations as fulfilling the requirements to become one of their IGCSE Centres.
It is the aim of the college that all our non-native speakers of English leave Campbell with a valid and recognised qualification in English, thus allowing them entry into tertiary education as well as preparing our students adequately for future employment.
Campbell College Junior School officially opened
Campbell College Junior School was opened, officially, on Friday 15 September by Sir John and Lady MacDermott.
The MacDermott family has over a hundred years connection with the College; four generations of the family have, either, served on the Board of Governors, or, acted on the Old Campbellian society. Indeed, the MacDermott Wing was named after Sir John’s father, Lord MacDermott, in recognition of 25 years of service to the Board.
The newly built Junior School has been described as a “quantum leap forward” in design, particularly, in the provision of environmentally friendly accommodation. The School features state-of-the-art ventilation, insulation, heating and acoustic systems; it stands as a monument to energy efficiency.
The official opening was celebrated by the Board of Governors, Junior School staff and parents, as well as the children from Kindergarten to Prep 7.
Understanding the EU
Three Year 14 students: Craig Blaney, Yates’s; Matthew Bradley, Bowen’s; and Ryan Livingston, Lytle’s, took part in the mock European Council for Northern Ireland. This was an event to develop understanding of the European Union and exercise skills such as public speaking. The team were asked to represent Denmark. In preparation they had to research the position of Denmark on key issues relating to the EU. The team was commended by the event's organisers for their preparations and contributions on the day.

Christmas Fair and Coffee Morning: Saturday 18 November
Once again the College Dining Hall was teeming with crowds of Christmas shoppers and the rich aroma of coffee and homemade scones pervaded the corridors at our Christmas Fair and Coffee Morning. Now established as an annual event, family and friends browse the variety of wares on offer from local charities supporting worthy causes worldwide. A total of £3,045.60 was raised.
Thank you to all who continue to support this worthy event.
Musical Maestro’s
Richard Hill, Year 12 Lytle’s, and Aaron Leung, Year 11 School House, took part in the Holywood Music Festival. Richard was awarded 1st place in the Grade 6-7 Clarinet and Saxophone section for his performance of the Tartini Clarinet Concerto; in the Open Section of the Piano Class, Aaron was awarded 2nd place.
A Christmas Carol
The College’s Dramatic Society, under the direction of Mrs Liz McIlvenny, produced A Christmas Carol: the first such production in six years. The corridors of CCB once again resounded to the sound of boys reaching for their lines and the Central Hall became a place of enchantment.
The play cast was purposefully drawn from all our year groups and, the College collaborated with Bloomfield Collegiate to allow six female students to become involved in the production; there is no doubt that their presence and acting skill enhanced the performance. The spirit of collaboration further embraced two student co-directors, a student lighting and sound crew as well as a student backstage management team. Rehearsals were long and exacting for both staff and students and everyone learnt the lesson that things worth doing require careful attention over weeks and months.
