Overview of Department: (aims & vision)

Art and Design and Moving Image Arts are exciting and engaging subjects which play a valuable part in the education of Campbell College boys. The visual arts provide unique ways of expressing feelings and ideas about the world in which they live. The curriculum content of Art & Design and Moving Image Arts at Campbell College aims to give our pupils an understanding and appreciation of arts and culture, keen visual literacy, and the creative and practical skills required to study the visual arts at GCSE, A Level, and in further and higher education.

Involvement in creative activity encourages the growth of worthwhile attitudes in the development of the individual. Co-operation, commitment, perseverance and tolerance demanded within the arts contribute to the all round personal and social development of every pupil. Our aim is to provide a welcoming and stimulating learning environment that offers every pupil a wide range of activities and experiences.

Through relevant, exciting and challenging units of work our department enhances our pupils’ awareness and perception of the visual arts. They are made to feel important, that they are individuals with ideas and feelings that can be directed into a range of creative and expressive experiences, to produce original and individualistic artistic statements.

One of our strengths is that all staff in the department work primarily on the basis of strong teamwork. Openness and fairness is encouraged and staff and parents work closely in partnership together to help all pupils achieve their full potential. We believe strongly in the importance of technical skill, taking creative risks, fostering valuable relationships through group work, as well as providing opportunities for the use of new technologies through both practical and research activities.

Course Content/Curriculum:

GCSE Art & Design: CCEA – GCSE Art and Design develops students’ understanding of how meanings, ideas and intentions can be communicated through visual and tactile language. Pupils learn how to use different media and technologies to realise their intentions. They develop their understanding of the creative and cultural industries, and refine their work through experimentation.

Through this course, pupils become critical thinkers with enquiring minds and increase their confidence in taking artistic risks. The course features a renewed focus on drawing, emphasising that it is an essential part of the creative process in all art, craft and design disciplines.

As well as exploring many artistic skills and processes, students develop their knowledge and understanding of historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures. The broad and flexible content gives students the freedom to pursue a range of creative pathways.

GCSE Moving Image Arts: CCEA - Students work on a range of creative, critical and technical tasks. These include planning and creating moving image products. This qualification builds on students’ introduction to the moving image at Key Stage 3. It helps them to progress to further study and practice at GCE level.

KS5:

A Level Art & Design: Edexcel – A level Art and Design encourages personal, creative and imaginative approaches to art and design. Its four-unit structure maximises choice and flexibility, allowing students to follow a broad, open course. The course flexibility allows pupils to work with both traditional and new media, and they can choose from fine art, three-dimensional design, textile design, photography — lens and light-based media, graphic communication and critical and contextual studies.

A Level Moving Image Arts: CCEA - Moving Image Arts (MIA) offers pupils a unique opportunity to develop and refine their skills as filmmakers. It enables students to broaden their experience of audio-visual culture to inform, inspire and contextualise their own creative ideas.

MIA is an ideal choice for students wishing to pursue a career in the creative industries, which value and promote independence, originality, creative enterprise and technical skill. The course develops creative and critical abilities in writing, directing, editing, producing and analysing films from a range of contexts and disciplines. MIA is a challenging and rewarding course, offering a solid foundation for progression to higher and further education and the creative industries.

Notable Achievements:

The Art & Design and Moving Image Arts Department at Campbell College hold a record of outstanding achievement at both GCSE and A level, with our pupils consistently attaining top grades.

We have recently had GCSE pupils work selected for the CCEA True Colours Exhibition which showcases some of the top work created by pupils each year from the summer examinations, and for the CCEA Moving Image Arts Showcase for both AS and A2 level.
