Campbell College Swimming Club has improved greatly from the early days when bathing took place in the old Ormiston outdoor pool. The opening of the 25 meter, heated, indoor swimming pool in 1968 transformed swimming from a minor summer activity to an all year – round – sport.
In today’s sporting arena members of the swimming club (Junior and Senior school) have a chance to enter the Ulster Schools’ Championships at minor, junior, intermediate or senior levels. Swimmers achieving qualifying times enter the Irish Schools’ Championship and can then, if selected, represent the college in Interprovincial and International competition.
The elite swim squad at Campbell College is one of only three schools in Northern Ireland to compete in “The Bath Cup” (A UK invitation relay squadron competition) staged at The National Sports Complex in Crystal Palace, London.
Campbell College encourages non competitive swimmers to participate in the sport of swimming through annual house competition. Water polo, Life saving and canoeing is incorporated and it is not uncommon to observe cadets from the Royal Navy Section practising capsize drill in the pool with the school sailing dinghies.
