Campbell College Rugby Football Club was founded in 1894 and has been playing regular competitive fixtures against schools in Ireland and throughout the British Isles since that time. Over the last thirty five years, touring has become part of the clubs way of life and visits to New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the continent of Europe have added colour and experience to the lives of the young players involved.
Winners of the Ulster Schools' Cup 24 times, with an additional 4 drawn finals, the last Ravenhill success was in 2018. Past Irish International players include Michael Gibson and in more recent times Gordon Hamilton, who is now Chairman of the College Board of Governors.
Most recent Ulster Rugby contracted players who are Old Campbellians; Paddy Wallace, Neil McComb, Michael McComish, James McKinney, Chris Farrell, Rory Scholes and Tom O'Toole. Since 2009, 29 of the boys have represented Ulster Schools' or Under 19 XVs, while 9 have been selected for Ireland and various age group levels. At present the college has two students in the extended Irish Schools squad.
Rugby is the major game enjoyed by over 400 boys throughout the Winter and Easter term. Campbell has rightly gained national recognition for the strength and success of its teams as well as the continued success of individual players who have come through the school’s coaching ranks to win professional playing contracts and international recognition.
